What is the difference between borax decahydrate and pentahydrate?
Both are sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7) differing only in water of crystallisation. Decahydrate (CAS 1303-96-4) carries more bound water, so it is more dilute at B2O3 36.0% / B 11.0%, while pentahydrate (CAS 12179-04-3) is more concentrated at B2O3 48.0% / B 15.0%.
